Frequent inspections could greatly help to lessen forklift maintenance and save you copious amounts of money in the long-run. The standing joke in the business is a lift truck technician coining the saying "Pay me now, or pay me later," since it usually costs more to procrastinate when it comes to lift trucks. For instance, the minor fixes that are not repaired could eventually turn into expensive repairs.

Tilt Cylinders
If they are not checked, oil leaks are a very serious problems. On a regular basis, the machinery should be checked for damage and/or oil leaks. Oil leaks could cause really dangerous uncontrolled movement of the mast. Whether the leaks are external or inside the cylinder, the end result can lead to cylinder drift and loss of vital fluid. When leaks or damage are detected, you normally would need to replace the seals or the complete cylinder assembly.

Chains
You don't want mast lift chains to stretch beyond acceptable limits, so pay attention and watch carefully for any indications of damage or wear and tear. Regularly check a chain wear gauge so as to monitor the wear. If the chain is rusted or worn beyond 2 percent, it is time to replace the chain. Following these tips will help keep your equipment running optimally.

Mast
The mast needs to be moving smoothly up and down when utilizing the lift control lever. Be sure to check to see if the mast is tilting forwards and backwards in a smooth way. You might have to lubricate the mast strip sliding surfaces if the sliding surfaces are binding. Lubricate their fittings too, since there is a fitting located on both sides of the inner mast. The lift bracket side rollers are one more lubrication spot.

Forks
The blades have to be checked for wear, cracks and damage since worn or cracked forks can fail with out any warnings. Of course, any damaged fork means immediately taking the truck out of service. If the cracks are deeper than just on the surface, they need to be replaced as they truly can't be safely fixed.
