Driving a lift truck is much more complex than driving a vehicle. A forklift driver should be really skilled and trained in utilizing a forklift. Driving a forklift requires a high level of concentration. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or also known as OSHA reports that 85 individuals die in forklift-related accidents every year year. Around 35,000 people are hurt every year in forklift accidents. Nearly half of operator deaths result from a lift truck tip over.

Drivers need to be able to correctly assess load weights in order to prevent the equipment from tipping over. The load weight in construction environments would often be posted on the load. If a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, and the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks, the whole weight of the load will be approximately 1,360 kilograms. If a load is wet, the operator must take more weight into consideration.

It is not safe for drivers to make poorly informed guesses regarding the real load weight and whether the lift truck could handle it. If an operator cannot be certain regarding the load weight, he must ask for help from the supervisor.

One more cause of tip overs is failure to pull up close enough to a building to lift or place a load with an extended boom. It is essential to use the load chart to prevent tipping the forklift. Even if a forklift does not really tip over, an accident has happened whenever the back wheels come off the ground. This means the forklift limitations have been exceeded. Although damage might not be obvious, the back axle could have sustained broken upon hitting the ground.

Forklifts could also tip when not carrying a load. An unloaded lift truck can tip if a driver has placed a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the driver reverses the forklift and suddenly turns whilst bringing the boom down, the forklift's center of gravity would be pushed to the edges and a tip over can result. An operator must always utilize the joysticks to retract and lower the fork.
