Forklift Safety Tips & Guidelines
Each year, there are about 20,000 cases of accidents which are related to utilizing forklifts within the United States alone. And every year roughly 100 deaths are caused by forklift accidents. Luckily, correct training about operation procedures and maintenance can significantly lessen the risk of accidents. The following basic safety regulations and tips should be followed whenever operating a forklift.

Training
It is the responsibility of the employer to make certain that the proper training program is given to the staff and that operators of forklifts are qualified.. Training includes a combination of lectures, presentations, discussions and practical hands-on training. Reevaluation must take place every three years. Forklift operators must be up-to-date with current forklift safety rules. Forklift training program content covers general workplace hazards, dangers of forklift operations, dangers connected to operating the specific forklift that the worker would be utilizing and workplace surfaces and lighting. An employee must be at least 18 years old to operate a forklift.

Maintenance
In order to make sure that the machinery is functioning safely and properly, forklift inspection should be done every day. The inspection includes keeping a checklist of things and reporting any concerns immediately.

The Work Place
Having a safe and clean workplace is essential in the safe use of a forklift. A work site which is safe means establishing "traffic lanes" which are just designated for forklift use. Warning systems like flashing lights and horns must be in place to indicate when there is an approaching forklift. Forklift docking stations must be inspected on a daily basis and kept in good repair.

General Guidelines
General safety rules for forklift operation consist of respecting the load capacity of the forklift and never exceeding the maximum; avoiding known hazards on the ground, such as oil spills or wet spots; ensuring there is enough clearance for the load; lowering or raising the load only while the forklift is stationary; and keeping legs, hands and arms in the vehicle during operation.
