Narrow Reach forklifts are most often used in product movement in a lot of warehouses. This machinery is an excellent choice as nearly all things now are packaged in a way which makes it much too heavy for one person to pick them up effectively or safely without the assistance of some kind of industrial equipment.
Job Description
The tasks of the lift truck driver are to safely transport products and materials from one place to another. They use forklift controls to perform precise movements such as raise and transporting loads efficiently. Drivers of forklifts usually unload shipping containers, trailers, trains or other kinds of storage units. The forklift operator has the added responsibility of checking the equipment on a regular basis so as to ensure it is safe and capable to carry out the required job.
Personal Qualities
Lift truck operators must have basic reading and writing skills. The forklift driver must be fit physically and able to carry 30 pounds. They must be physically able to use a forklift; therefore, they require the physical ability of utilizing both hands, both feet and both arms. The forklift driver should ideally be able to stand for an 8 hour shift. In most work settings, they would be allowed to have two short coffee breaks and a half-hour lunch break during the day. It is important that the driver of the forklift not be prone to rage of any type or reckless driving.
Training
Often, forklift training is completed on the job. This training includes control training and safety training, which is done through a series of videos, and tests. A performance test would also be conducted on the lift truck. When the tests have been completed successfully, a license can be issued. This license should be renewed based on shop procedures and based on state and provincial laws. If you get the chance to finish your lift truck training on the job, it is a great idea and it is one more skill you could add to your resume.
Job Locations
A lot of forklift drivers work in the warehouse department of retail or manufacturing facilities. Lots of lift truck operators work in various fields depending upon the needs of the company and the individual they work for. Forklifts are very handy pieces of equipment which could be found on both logging sites and construction sites as well as in nearly all shipping and receiving facilities, ports and train yards.
