Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is provided by huge industrial batteries which need to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety measures should always be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is very vital to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a forklift battery. Complete protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area must be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the station should not be obstructed and an injured worker must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Do not allow things like lighters or matches to be used while somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging method can release gas. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
